A week with Big Bass Fishin

I didn't expect much from Big Bass Fishin when I installed it. Fishing games on mobile usually fall into two camps: mindless tap-fests or overcomplicated menus. This one sits in a nice middle ground where the fishing itself is the whole appeal.

The reeling mechanic is the star. You cast with a flick, then hold to reel while watching a tension gauge. Pull too hard and the line snaps, too soft and the fish gets loose. Every catch is a tiny negotiation, and the big ones make you sweat a little. That tension is what kept bringing me back.

Different lakes behave differently. Some fish dart, some dive, and you learn to read the ripples before you even cast. It's a small system but it gives the game more depth than the simple controls suggest. I started planning which spot to hit based on what I wanted to catch.

My advice: don't rush the early rods. Take your time getting comfortable with the timing before you chase bigger fish, because the fight scales up. Also play with headphones on, the ambient water and reel sounds do a lot for the calm mood.

After a week it earned a permanent spot on my home screen. It's not flashy, but it's the game I reach for when I want to unwind for ten minutes.
